Sour is a murder story with a difference. It's set in a small town in Ireland, it's a very Irish novel, down to the crazy, drunken characters, the wild natural surroundings, the weather, the grim outlook and the history. But more than any of those things, it's an Irish story which comes from the very depths of Irish folklore. Sour takes, the story of Deirdre of the Sorrows, one of the old Irish tales, and retells it as the story of a runaway girl, the boys who help her, the man who'd out to get her and the old, curmudgeon fool who happens to be trying to solve the whole crime. It should probably also be mentioned the book is narrated by a Puca, a mythical Irish creature known for mischief, in case it seemed liked things were going to be straightforward.
